(Carson City, NV; February 4, 2020) – Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske reports an increase of 27,149 active registered voters statewide during the month of January 2020 as compared to December 2019. The total number of active registered voters in Nevada is 1,601,889, an increase of 1.72%. The month-over-month increase in active registered voters is due in significant part to the implementation of automatic voter registration at the Department of Motor Vehicles that began January 1, 2020.
Democratic Party active registered voters statewide increased by 7,912 (1.31%), while Republican Party active registered voters statewide increased by 3,972 (0.76%). Nonpartisan active registered voters increased by 13,996 (4.01%), Independent American Party active registered voters increased by 1,020 (1.45%), and Libertarian Party of Nevada active registered voters increased by 203 (1.27%). Active registered voters from a compilation of “other” minor political parties increased by 46 (0.36%).
Like the overall increase in the number of active registered voters, the significant increase in nonpartisan registered voters is largely due to the implementation of automatic voter registration. Pursuant to Assembly Bill 345 from the 2019 Legislative Session, the selection of a political party affiliation must be made after the individual completes their transaction with the DMV. Because of the extra step involved, many individuals simply do not select a political party affiliation and are therefore defaulted to nonpartisan status.
Of the 1,601,889 active registered voters in Nevada:
• 610,911 are Democrats (38.14%);
• 527,641 are Republicans (32.94%);
• 362,855 are Nonpartisan (22.65%);
• 71,335 are members of the Independent American Party (4.45%);
• 16,224 are members of the Libertarian Party of Nevada (1.01%); and
• 12,923 are members of other minor political parties (0.81%).
